Client Case: Clicking Noise in Laptop Hard Drive
A client recently brought us a Western Digital 2.5-inch hard drive (model HL-10TMVW) from a laptop. The drive had developed a clicking noise, a common sign of internal damage.
Clean Room Head Swap to the Rescue
This drive required extensive clean room work. Thankfully, we had a compatible donor drive, which made it possible to carry out a successful head swap—a delicate and highly technical procedure.
Once the head swap was completed, we were able to create an image of the original drive and transfer all recovered data to a new portable drive.
➡️ Result: All data saved. One very happy client!

Why You Should Never Ignore Clicking Sounds
A clicking noise from a hard drive usually means mechanical failure, often related to the read/write heads.
IMPORTANT: If your hard drive starts clicking, power it down immediately and contact a data recovery specialist. Continuing to use the drive can cause permanent data loss.
Head Swap in Hard Drive Recovery – What It Means
A head swap involves replacing the damaged read/write heads of a hard drive with working ones from an identical model. This must be done in a certified clean room to avoid contamination and further damage. It’s a job for trained professionals only.
